How the score works

Four things decide whether a niche can pay rent. The scanner measures each one per market.

Demand

Monthly Google searches across 5 to 6 ways people search for the trade, with and without the city name, measured at county level.

Lead value

Volume-weighted cost per click. What local businesses already pay Google for one visitor tells you what a lead is worth to them.

Map pack

How many established listings show on Google Maps, and the median review count of the top three. A pack full of 500-review companies is a long fight.

Page one

Who holds the organic results. Directories like Yelp and Angi are beatable. Local company sites and exact-match domains are not.

Score = demand x value / competition, scaled 0 to 100. Minus 15 when Local Services Ads show, minus 25 under 150 searches a month. Under 50 searches the niche is cut.

What the first nationwide scan found

  • 39 of 47 niches had no local business site on page one, only directories, national sites and lead-gen pages. That is the gap a rank-and-rent site fills.
  • The median top-3 listing had 28 reviews. Plenty of markets still have thin map packs.
  • 5 niches were cut for having under 50 searches a month, before any money was spent checking them.

Questions

What is a rank and rent niche?

A local service in one market where you can build a site, rank it in Google, and rent the leads or the whole site to a business that does the work. Good niches have steady search demand, real cost per click, and a map pack and page one you can actually break into.

Where does the data come from?

Search volume and cost per click come from Google Ads data. Map pack listings, review counts and page one results come from live Google searches in each city. Both are pulled through DataForSEO.

How is the score calculated?

Monthly searches times average cost per click, divided by a competition figure built from established map listings, top-3 review counts, local sites on page one, and exact-match domains. Then 15 points off if Local Services Ads show and 25 off under 150 searches a month.

Why county-level search volume?

City-level Google numbers mostly bottom out at 10 searches. Metro-wide numbers fold in the big city next door. The county is closest to the area a rank-and-rent site actually serves.

Does a high score guarantee rent?

No. It ranks where the odds look best. The scanner also tracks the sites that get built, so the score can be checked against real rent over time.
